In
1996, Randy Nelson and Bob Thornton were both working in the Community
Development Office of the City of Jackson, Tennessee. Randy was the
Director and Bob was a Community Development Specialist. From their
years of experience working in Community Development in West Tennessee,
they became aware of the need for a comprehensive community planning
firm that could provide planning and community development services
to local governments. They believed a business niche existed for a
firm to provide these services.
Nelson
Thornton Consultants was formed in 1996 as a partnership between Randy
and Bob. The business started out with just a handful of housing rehabilitation
grants from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency. Soon clients
were found for public infrastructure grants to be submitted to the
Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. Planning
contracts were found in the City of Tupelo, Mississippi for an Affordable
Housing Strategy and the City of Martin, Tennessee for an Economic
Development Strategy.
Business
has continually grown since its inception. Nelson Thornton Consultants
incorporated in 2003 as a professional corporation named Nelson Thornton,
P.C. The firm currently works in over twelve communities in West Tennessee.
